Pocket Watches Are Forever

As opposed to wristwatches which are meant to be worn on the wrist, a pocket watch, as the name suggests, is a watch placed on the pocket. They are often in traditional analog displays. It can be placed on any of the coat pockets, on the trousers, or vest pockets and are often secured by a chain to a belt loop or the lapel for security.

A pocket watch cannot be called such without its ornamental parts. The chain, also referred to as a fob, that secures the watch often comes in gold or silver. The cover that is present in most pocket watches to protect the face of the watch may be designed with intricate engravings or studded with gemstones. Most pocket watches also have a fastener to attach the watch to the users garments.

Pocket watches came long before wristwatches became known. The first mention of a pocket watches ever known was in 1462. It was on a letter written by an Italian clocksmith named Bartholomew Manfredi for the Marchese di Manta offering the latter a pocket clock. guarantees the Marchese that this pocket clock he will do for him will be better than the one then owned by the Duke of Modena.

Pocket watches, then still referred to as pocket clocks, appeared as spring-driven models in Italy by the end of the 1400s. Peter Heinlein, a German locksmith from Nuremberg started manufacturing pocket watches in 1510. Soon after that, the manufacture of pocket watches spread rapidly throughout Europe.

There are two types of pocket watches: open-faced and hunter type. Open-faced pocket watches are simply those that do not have covers. The hunter type are the covered ones. The cover protects the crystal on the watch face. Pocket watches has a seconds dial that is located at the six oclock position, a stem for the chain at twelve oclock, and a hunter stem for the hinged cover at six oclock. Another type of pocket watch that looks interesting is the old-fashioned wind-up winding pocket watches.

Whether it is open-faced or hunter-type, todays pocket watches uses the quartz movement feature.

Despite the fact that pocket watches are not as common or popular as the modern wristwatches, theyre still deemed an upscale, attractive, and prestigious timepieces that double as a fashion accessory as well. Pocket watches as well as pocket watch accessories make perfect presents for traditionalists. The cover can also be engraved with loving messages making them excellent as sentimental tokens.

Pocket watches come in all forms and styles: there are Swiss Army Pocket watches, ladies pendants, chronograph and traditional pocket watches. Any of them can make a great keepsake.
