Welcome!
Thanks to all of you who emailed me your wish list. As
you are reading this issue of Gift News, I am walking
the isles of the Holiday Trade Show and thinking of you
and your wishes.
I can't wait to get back and share with you all the
wonderful things I find!
Now, as you probably noticed, I've decided to stop
sending the middle of the month newsletter, as I think a
monthly format will better respect your time. If you
have any comments or suggestions, please don't hesitate
to email
me.
Don't forget to take time for yourself this summer.
Wishing you a great August,

- The "Permission Tree" Lets You Branch
Out to Customers
|
| |
The
following article is reprinted with permission from Dana
Blakenhorn, e-commerce author and creator of
www.a-clue.com.
In chatting with a friend about a client, I suggested
using the concept of Permission Marketing. Permission
Marketing is really like building a relationship. There
are many levels, and you need to approach each level
differently.
For instance, what if someone has been on your website
and filled out your form but hasn't tried out your
service? People like this are solid prospects with some
knowledge of what you offer. It's your responsibility to
build the relationship.
Thus the "Permission Tree", which fills out
the branches of Permission Marketing for the Internet
Age. The lowest branch of the Permission Tree is an
e-mail address. If you get someone's phone number, you
have more marketing permission. If you get their
address, you have still more permission. You may not
have an order, yet you may be much closer to an order
than before. So why aren't you providing incentives,
gifts and attention to this person as you try and gain
this information?
Depending on what you are selling, you may need even
more information than this to get transaction permission
(the sale). At some point in the process you will want
to know about elements of their lifestyle that relate to
your business.
But here's the point. You should be willing to pay for
this information. You can pay for it with a handwritten
note answering a question, you can pay with it using
credit points or you can pay for it using discounts. You
don't necessarily have to pay with cash. You can pay
with attention. Someone who is actively reading your
e-mails is a much better prospect than someone who just
comes in off the street, or someone who merely accepts
your e-mails stoically and doesn't call the spam police.
Now here's the pay-off. Your customer database must be
able to map all these layers of permission and all your
customer contacts. Your e-mail must be able to deliver a
custom (or semi-custom) product to each prospect in the
database, based on how much permission you have. And
your sales efforts should always be geared to increasing
the level of permission you have with each contact. If
you have permission to pitch one product line, get
permission to pitch others. If you have transaction
permission, get permission to give them regular offers.
One more point: audit everything. Be sure to audit your
e-mail lists to prove something to your customer - that
you care about them. Treat them as a loving partner and
only then will they love you back.
