Did You Miss Your August Newsletter?

I hope you did, and I apologize for not sending it. I won't bore you with all the details, but let's just say that being away from your business and home for almost a month will keep you busy once you return. I want to make it up to you, so read on: I'll have a nice surprise for you before the end of this month's newsletter.

Romanian Hand Made Scenery

In July's Gift News, I had a challenge for you. And even though many new people signed up for Gift News, I didn't receive your emails claiming those new subscribers. So, I only have one prize to award to one of the new subscribers, and the winner is, reasga at aol dot com (reasga, please email me from this email address with your mailing address, so I can send you the gift). And to the left you can see the gift for reasga: it's handmade by Romanian artisans.

Today's feature article will be about gift giving in Romania, and I will also include a Romanian recipe: I hope you enjoy it.

I always welcome your feedback: feel free to send it here (adriana@abcgiftsandbaskets.com).

Until next time,

GIFT-GIVING IN ROMANIA

The most common gift giving occasions are similar to those here is the sates: birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, new babies, etc. Other occasions to present gifts are a visit to someone's home, signing a contract, the first visit to a colleague's office, or leaving the country.

In the business arena the most common gifts are alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. Also, spare parts for a device once bought abroad are very well appreciated, as are  pocket calculators and nice pens or lighters with the logo of your company.

Flowers are great gifts for women, but you need to make sure the bouquet always includes an odd number of flowers (an even number symbolizes mourning).

The best way to present a gift in Romania is to go in person, and have the gift wrapped nicely. And when they receive a gift, Romanians will open it on the spot and admire it. Most of the time, Romanians don't send "Thank You" notes for gifts they received, but they will reminisce about your gift in future conversations.

Now for the surprise I mentioned: I have one more of the gifts pictured above, and it can be yours. To get a chance at owning it, all you need to do is send me a testimonial for this newsletter, or some feedback: what you like, or don't like about Gift News, or what you would like to see in this newsletter. After all, this is for you, and I want to make sure you keep reading it, and sending it to your friends. You can send your testimonial or comments here (adriana@abcgiftsandbaskets.com), and I will pick the winner just before the next Gift News goes out, on October 1st. I am looking forward to your comments.

White Bean Dip (Fasole Batuta) - Romanian Recipe
4 servings

2 cans white beans (16oz)
5 garlic cloves
10 Tablespoons sunflower or canola oil
salt to taste
1 large onion
2 tablespoons tomato paste

Drain beans well and place in a food processor or blender. Process or puree until thick and smooth.

Peel and mash the garlic cloves, until smooth, then add it to the pureed beans with the salt and 5 spoons of the oil, and mix well.

Take the other 5 spoons of oil, and heat them in a skillet, add the onion sliced into  half moons by cutting the onion in half lengthwise then making thin crosswise slices. Sprinkle with a little salt, and fry until golden, then add the tomato paste and sauté for about 10 more minutes, stirring occasionally.

Top your bean puree with the sautéed onions, and serve at room temperature or chilled. Delicious served with fresh bread.
