Special Birthday Gifts and Celebrations
I don't know about you, but at our house birthdays are
celebrated without much fanfare. There is 4 of us, and each birthday gets
celebrated a little different than the other one, depending on who's birthday
is.
For example, our 11 year old likes to have a few friends over to
play with. She doesn't care much about having an actual "party", but rather
spend time doing what she likes: talk to friends. They may watch a movie and
have a little cake, but that's all.
Our 17 year old loves gadgets, and he'd prefer to get one of
those any time instead of inviting friends over. So, we listen to what he talks
about during the year, and pick one we think it's appropriate for him. and he's
always happy.
My husband loves to dress nicely, so clothes for him are
perfect. A nice shirt, a new pair of slacks, and an occasional pair of shorts
are just the thing for him.
As for me, I don't care for "things": I can get those myself.
What I want is an experience! You know? A relaxing massage, going out to see a
nice movie, a nice exotic trip....
And you know what? This year I am getting one of the best gifts
possible: a 5 day trip to Saint Thomas the Virgin Islands with my family. It
will be the best birthday gift I ever had, and I will enjoy every minute of it.
I guess what I am trying to tell you is that the best birthday
gift you can offer someone is something they enjoy. It doesn't matter what YOU
like. Make it special for them: listen and watch all year to see what will make
them happy, and if you can , give it to them. They'll remember it and talk about
it for years to come. I know I will: I may even tell you about it in an upcoming
newsletter.
